Xiongnu Administrative Organization

Overview

The Xiongnu maintained a hierarchical governance system with hereditary positions, territorial divisions, and military-civil administration.

Top Leadership

  • 单于 (Shanyu): Supreme ruler
  • 左右骨都侯 (Left/Right Gudu Marquises): Chief advisors, handle governance

Four Great Kings (四大王)

  1. 左贤王 (Left Wise King) - Often the crown prince, title "Left Tuti King" (左屠耆王)
  2. 右贤王 (Right Wise King)
  3. 左谷蠡王 (Left Guli King)
  4. 右谷蠡王 (Right Guli King)

Military Hierarchy (24 Commanders)

  • 左右大将 (Left/Right Great Generals)
  • 左右大都尉 (Left/Right Great Commandants)
  • 左右大当户 (Left/Right Great Household Chiefs)

Unit Structure

  • Large commands: 10,000 cavalry (万骑)
  • Small commands: Several thousand cavalry
  • Total: 24 commanders titled "Wanqi" (万骑 - Commander of Ten Thousand Horse)

Subordinate Officers

Each of the 24 commanders appoints:

  • 千长 (Thousand Commander)
  • 百长 (Hundred Commander)
  • 什长 (Ten Commander)
  • 裨小王 (Minor Kings)
  • 相 (Ministers)
  • 封都尉 (Frontier Commandants)
  • 当户 (Household Chiefs)
  • 且渠 (Qüqu officials)

Territorial Division

Eastern Region (Left)

  • Commanded by Left Wise King and Left-side commanders
  • Extends from Shanggu toward: Huimo, Chaoxian (Korea)

Western Region (Right)

  • Commanded by Right Wise King and Right-side commanders
  • Extends from Shangjun toward: Yuezhi, Di, Qiang peoples

Central Region

  • Shanyu's court (单于之庭)
  • Located near Dai and Yunzhong

Noble Clans

Three aristocratic families:

  • 呼衍氏 (Huyan clan)
  • 兰氏 (Lan clan)
  • 须卜氏 (Xubu clan)

Expected Outcomes

  • Clear chain of command
  • Efficient military mobilization
  • Balanced territorial control
  • Hereditary stability in leadership

Verification

  • Confirm all 24 Wanqi commander positions are accounted for with correct left/right designations
  • Validate that territorial divisions (eastern, western, central) match their assigned commanders and geographic boundaries
  • Check that the three noble clans (呼衍氏, 兰氏, 须卜氏) and their hereditary roles are correctly identified
