Imperial Inspection Tour Protocol

A five-year cycle of systematic inspection tours covering the four cardinal directions of the realm.

Overview

The emperor conducts inspection tours to verify governance, standardize measurements, perform rituals, and assess local conditions throughout the territory.

Steps

  1. Preparation

    • Select auspicious days for departure
    • Gather the five jade tablets (五瑞) as credentials
    • Prepare ritual items and gifts

  2. Eastern Tour (Second Month)

    • Travel to Dai Zong (Mount Tai)
    • Perform fire ritual (祡) to heaven
    • Conduct mountain and river rituals in order
    • Meet with eastern regional leaders
    • Standardize: calendar, measurements, weights
    • Review: five rituals, five jades, three silks, two live animals, one dead animal as gifts

  3. Southern Tour (Fifth Month)

    • Follow same protocol as eastern tour
    • Assess southern governance
    • Perform regional rituals

  4. Western Tour (Eighth Month)

    • Follow same protocol as eastern tour
    • Assess western governance
    • Perform regional rituals

  5. Northern Tour (Eleventh Month)

    • Follow same protocol as eastern tour
    • Assess northern governance
    • Perform regional rituals

  6. Return and Report

    • Return to ancestral temple
    • Perform special bull sacrifice
    • Document findings and decisions

  7. Audience Period

    • Regional lords attend court for four years
    • Receive verbal instructions
    • Demonstrate achievements
    • Receive rewards (chariots, clothing) based on merit

Cycle Schedule

  • Year 1: Imperial tour
  • Years 2-5: Lords attend court
  • Repeat cycle

Validation

  • Verify that calendars, weights, and measurements are consistent across all four regions after the tour
