Turtle Shell Divination Ritual

Overview

Traditional Chinese divination method using turtle shells (龟卜) to determine auspicious outcomes for decisions. Used for state affairs, military campaigns, health inquiries, and personal matters.

Preparation

  1. Select a turtle shell at least 1.2 feet in length
  2. Perform cleansing ritual on the first day of the month:
    • Wash shell with clean water
    • Purify using eggs
    • Hold shell and recite prayers
  3. Avoid divination on days: 子(zǐ), 亥(hài), 戌(xū)
  4. Do not divine at noon (during meals) or at dusk
  5. Best days for killing/drilling: 庚(gēng), 辛(xīn)

Divination Procedure

  1. Face north during the ritual
  2. Create drill marks on the shell
  3. Apply heat to create cracks:
    • Burn the center first (正身)
    • Then burn the head area (正足)
    • Repeat each three times
  4. Circle the shell three times with the burning tool

Prayer to Recite

"假之玉灵夫子。夫子玉灵，荆灼而心，令而先知。而上行於天，下行於渊，诸灵数ｋ，莫如汝信。今日良日，行一良贞。某欲卜某，即得而喜，不得而悔。即得，发乡我身长大，首足收人皆上偶。不得，发乡我身挫折，中外不相应，首足灭去。"

Interpretation

  • 首仰足开 (head raised, feet open): Favorable for obtaining desires
  • 首仰足肣 (head raised, feet closed): Unfavorable, desires not obtained
  • 横吉安 (horizontal auspicious peace): Stable, no change
  • 呈兆 (presented omen): Illness not fatal, prisoners released

Expected Outcomes

Clear guidance on: illness prognosis, legal outcomes, travel safety, business ventures, finding lost items, weather prediction, and military success.

Verification

  • Confirm the turtle shell meets minimum length (1.2 feet) and cleansing ritual was performed on the first day of the month
  • Validate that divination was not conducted on prohibited days (子, 亥, 戌) or during prohibited times (noon, dusk)
  • Check that crack pattern interpretation matches the established classification system (首仰足开 = favorable, 首仰足肣 = unfavorable)
