Succession Crisis Resolution

A framework for resolving disputes over rightful succession.

Overview

When succession is unclear or disputed, follow this process to establish legitimate rule.

Priority Order for Succession

  1. Designated Heir (太子)

    • Officially named crown prince
    • Born of principal wife
    • Recognized by previous ruler

  2. Eldest Son of Principal Wife

    • If no designated heir
    • Legitimate birth critical

  3. Talented Son

    • Demonstrated capability
    • Support of key ministers

  4. Brother of Deceased Ruler

    • If no suitable son exists
    • Must have capability and support

Resolution Process

  1. Gather Key Ministers: Convene council of senior officials
  2. Present Claims: Allow each candidate to present case
  3. Evaluate Support: Assess which candidate has broadest backing
  4. Consider External Powers: Factor in support from allied states
  5. Seek Consensus: Work toward unified decision
  6. Announce Decision: Publicly declare new ruler
  7. Eliminate Rivals: Remove or neutralize competing claimants if necessary

Warning Signs of Instability

  • Multiple candidates with equal support
  • External powers backing different claimants
  • Military divided in loyalty

Expected Outcome

Clear succession with minimal bloodshed and stable transition of power.

Verification

  1. Confirm that the priority order of succession (designated heir, eldest legitimate son, talented son, brother) was followed or that deviations are justified.
  2. Validate that key ministers and allied external powers were consulted before the public announcement.
  3. Check for instability warning signs: multiple candidates with equal support, foreign-backed rival claimants, or divided military loyalty.
