Strategic Decision Under Ill Omens

Overview

A framework for making strategic decisions when traditional divination or omens suggest failure, but other factors favor action.

The Dilemma

  • Divination shows unfavorable results
  • Natural signs appear threatening (storms, etc.)
  • But strategic timing and preparation suggest action is needed

Decision Framework

  1. Assess the Strategic Situation

    • Is the enemy vulnerable?
    • Is the cause just?
    • Have preparations been made?

  2. Evaluate the Omens Objectively

    • Are the omens truly relevant to the action?
    • Could fear be clouding judgment?

  3. Consider the Cost of Inaction

    • Will delay allow the enemy to strengthen?
    • Will momentum be lost?

  4. Make the Decision

    • If strategic factors strongly favor action, proceed despite omens
    • A strong advisor should advocate for action if the ruler hesitates

  5. Execute Decisively

    • Do not allow fear to undermine the campaign
    • Commit fully once the decision is made

Historical Example

Before the Battle of Muye, King Wu's divination showed ill omens and a violent storm arrived. All the lords were afraid, but Taigong strongly urged King Wu to proceed. The result was victory over the Shang dynasty.

Validation

  1. Confirm the strategic assessment was conducted independently of the divination: enemy vulnerability, cause justice, and preparation are all evaluated on their own merits
  2. Verify that the decision to proceed was backed by a strong advisor's advocacy, not made recklessly by the leader alone
  3. Check that execution was fully committed — no half-measures or hedging that would undermine the campaign once the decision was made
