Overview

This procedure outlines how to respond when facing public criticism or accusations, particularly in political or organizational contexts. The approach emphasizes humility and self-reflection over counter-attack.

Steps

  1. When criticized, do not immediately retaliate - Avoid responding with counter-accusations or defensive arguments
  2. Remove symbols of authority - Take off ceremonial items (traditionally: remove hat and surrender official seal)
  3. Issue a humble acknowledgment - State: "I have been fortunate to serve in my position due to connections, but I am truly not worthy of this role. The accusations against me are correct."
  4. Offer resignation - Propose to step down from the position
  5. Allow the superior to decide - This approach typically results in:
    • The superior appreciating your humility and not dismissing you
    • The accuser feeling ashamed and potentially withdrawing

Expected Outcomes

  • Preservation of reputation through demonstrated humility
  • Superior's respect for your self-awareness and grace
  • Accuser loses moral high ground
  • Avoids appearing petty or lacking dignity

Warning

Retaliating when criticized makes one appear like a common merchant or quarreling woman, lacking proper dignity and perspective.

Verification

  1. Confirm that the initial response avoided all counter-accusations and defensive arguments.
  2. Validate that symbols of authority were surrendered and a humble acknowledgment was issued before the superior's decision.
  3. Check that the accuser has lost moral high ground as a result of your demonstrated humility, rather than gaining further ammunition.
