Reputation Preservation Through Association

Overview

A method for understanding how individuals achieve lasting fame, based on the principle that reputation endures through connection with renowned figures.

Core Principle

"闾巷之人，欲砥行立名者，非附青云之士，恶能施于后世哉？" (Ordinary people who wish to establish their names must attach themselves to eminent persons)

Steps

  1. Cultivate Personal Virtue

    • Practice moral conduct (砥行)
    • Develop noteworthy character and achievements

  2. Seek Association with Eminent Figures

    • Connect with recognized sages, scholars, or leaders
    • Position oneself in relation to their legacy (附骥尾 - attaching to the horse's tail)

  3. Document the Connection

    • Ensure the association is recorded in texts or traditions
    • Example: Bo Yi and Shu Qi became famous through Confucius's mention

Examples

  • Bo Yi & Shu Qi: Unknown without Confucius's endorsement
  • Yan Hui: Fame enhanced through association with Confucius

Expected Outcomes

  • Greater likelihood of name surviving in historical record

Validation
