Overview
A method for handling those who wronged you when you were powerless, once you regain authority and position.
Steps
- Allow opportunity for flight: If the wrongdoer flees, do not immediately pursue with violence
- Issue a measured threat: Send word that failure to appear will result in severe consequences (to family/clan)
- Accept sincere apology: When the person presents themselves in contrition (e.g., bare-backed), accept it
- Reference the past grievance lightly: Use humor or light reference to the past insult
- Demonstrate magnanimity: Treat the person well going forward
Key Principles
- "死灰独不复然乎" (Can dead ashes not burn again?) - Acknowledge that fortunes change
- Those who insult the powerless may be valuable when circumstances reverse
- Mercy creates loyal supporters; vengeance creates enemies
Decision Points
- If the person refuses to appear after summons → enforce consequences
- If the person shows genuine remorse → forgive and use their skills
Expected Outcomes
- Reputation for generosity and fairness spreads
- Former adversaries become loyal supporters
- Others are encouraged to serve faithfully, knowing mercy is possible
Verification
- Confirm the former adversary has shown genuine remorse (not mere performance) before granting forgiveness
- Validate that the reconciliation is publicly visible enough to build the intended reputation for magnanimity
- Check that the reconciled party is given meaningful responsibilities to cement their new loyalty
