Night Attack on Encamped Enemy
Overview
Tactical procedure for conducting a surprise night assault against an enemy encampment, based on Wei Qing's attack on the Xiongnu Right Wise King.
Preconditions
- Enemy believes they are beyond reach of your forces
- Enemy has become complacent (e.g., drunk)
- Your forces can approach undetected
Steps
-
Approach Undetected
- Force march to reach enemy position
- Arrive at night when enemy least expects
-
Encircle the Camp
- Surround the enemy position under cover of darkness
- Cut off escape routes
-
Launch Surprise Attack
- Attack while enemy is unprepared
- Enemy leadership will panic and attempt to flee
-
Pursue Fleeing Leadership
- Enemy commander will escape with small escort
- Dispatch light cavalry to pursue (hundreds of li)
-
Capture Secondary Targets
- If primary target escapes, capture subordinate kings and nobles
- Seize population, livestock, and supplies
-
Withdraw with Captures
- Return to friendly territory with prisoners and booty
Expected Outcome
Even if the primary enemy leader escapes, capture of subordinate leaders, soldiers, civilians, and livestock constitutes a major victory.
Verification
- Confirm the enemy camp is confirmed complacent (reduced guards, evidence of drinking/relaxation) before committing to the assault
- Validate that encirclement is complete and escape routes are covered before initiating the attack
- Check that secondary targets (subordinate kings, nobles, livestock, supplies) are secured even if the primary leader escapes
