Overview

A framework for evaluating music and dance performances, interpreting their deeper moral and political implications based on the teachings of Ji Zha (延陵季子).

Steps

  1. Listen to Regional Songs

    • Observe the foundational character of the music
    • Note whether it expresses diligence without resentment
    • Assess if it shows depth without being trapped in sorrow

  2. Evaluate Emotional Balance

    • Check for appropriate emotional expression:
      • Joy without excess (乐而不淫)
      • Sorrow without despair (哀而不愁)
      • Grief without oppression

  3. Assess Moral Qualities

    • Straightness without arrogance (直而不倨)
      • Breadth without ostentation (广而不宣)
    • Giving without waste (施而不费)
    • Taking without greed (取而不贪)

  4. Observe Dance Performances

    • Note the historical and moral significance
    • Assess whether the performance reflects virtuous leadership
    • Determine if it represents peak moral achievement

  5. Draw Political Conclusions

    • Connect musical qualities to governance
    • Predict state outcomes based on musical character
    • Identify signs of decline or prosperity

Decision Points

  • If music shows excessive detail or complexity, predict decline
  • If music demonstrates balance and restraint, predict stability
  • If dance shows complete virtue, recognize it as the highest achievement
