Military Deception Tactics (from Sun Bin's strategies)

Overview

Techniques for deceiving enemies by manipulating their perceptions of your strength and intentions.

Tactic 1: False Weakness Through Staged Retreat

Steps

  1. Enter enemy territory and establish initial presence
  2. Gradually reduce visible signs of your forces (e.g., cooking fires)
  3. Pattern: Day 1 = 100,000 fires → Day 2 = 50,000 fires → Day 3 = 30,000 fires
  4. Enemy interprets this as mass desertion and becomes overconfident
  5. Enemy rushes forward with light forces, abandoning heavy support
  6. Set ambush at narrow, defensible position
  7. Strike when enemy is committed and vulnerable

Tactic 2: Asymmetric Resource Allocation

Steps

  1. Assess your resources against opponent's (divide into tiers: upper, middle, lower)
  2. Sacrifice your weakest against their strongest (accept one loss)
  3. Deploy your strongest against their middle tier (secure one win)
  4. Deploy your middle against their weakest (secure second win)
  5. Result: 2 wins, 1 loss = overall victory

Expected Outcome

Victory against numerically superior forces through strategic deception and resource optimization.

Validation

  1. Confirm the enemy has taken the bait — verify they interpret reduced cooking fires as desertion rather than deception before committing to ambush
  2. Verify the ambush position is narrow and defensible enough to negate the enemy's numerical advantage once they commit
  3. In asymmetric allocation, confirm tier assignments are accurate — misclassifying your own or enemy strength levels inverts the 2-1 outcome
