Managing Credit and Humility

Overview

Navigate the complex dynamics of receiving credit for achievements, especially when actions involved breaking rules or betraying trust.

Steps

  1. Recognize when pride in achievement may damage important relationships
  2. Accept counsel from trusted advisors about appropriate demeanor
  3. Distinguish between debts owed to you (remember) and debts you are owed (forget)
  4. Acknowledge the complicated nature of your actions when they served one party but harmed another
  5. Publicly express remorse for any harm caused, even while achieving good
  6. Deflect honors and rewards through ritual humility
  7. Frame your actions as duty rather than favor

Key Principles

  • What others did for you: never forget
  • What you did for others: let go completely
  • Acknowledge that serving one interest may mean betraying another

Expected Outcomes

  • Maintained relationships despite complicated circumstances
  • Reputation for integrity rather than arrogance
  • Avoided resentment from those who might feel threatened

Verification

  1. Confirm that trusted advisors have been consulted on the appropriate public demeanor before making statements.
  2. Validate that any harm caused by your actions has been publicly acknowledged, even while the positive outcome is celebrated.
  3. Check that credit has been framed as duty rather than personal favor in all communications.
