Legitimacy Building for Uprising

A method for creating perceived divine mandate and popular support when initiating a rebellion against existing authority.

Overview

Successful uprisings require more than military force; they need perceived legitimacy. This method uses omens, prophecies, and symbolic actions to establish divine mandate.

Steps

  1. Identify popular grievances

    • Assess what hardships the people suffer under current rule
    • Determine if the population is ready for change

  2. Create symbolic omens

    • Place prophetic messages in unexpected locations (e.g., inside fish)
    • Use mysterious sounds or lights at night to suggest supernatural approval
    • Ensure omens point to the intended leader

  3. Invoke respected historical figures

    • Claim connection to beloved deceased leaders or princes
    • Use names that carry popular legitimacy
    • Connect cause to established dynastic or heroic lineages

  4. Demonstrate bold action

    • Take decisive action against symbols of oppression
    • Show willingness to risk everything for the cause

  5. Declare righteous purpose

    • Frame the uprising as restoring proper order
    • Emphasize moral justification
    • Rally supporters with clear declaration: "Are kings and nobles born to their stations?" (王侯将相宁有种乎)

  6. Establish organizational structure quickly

    • Appoint military commanders
    • Create administrative positions
    • Begin territorial expansion immediately
