Imperial Legitimacy Ritual (封禅礼仪)

Overview

A procedure for performing the Feng and Shan sacrifices to establish and reinforce imperial legitimacy through connection to divine authority.

Prerequisites

  • Unification of the realm
  • Period of peace and prosperity
  • Auspicious signs or omens
  • Proper ritual vessels and offerings

Steps

  1. Preparation Phase

    • Consult with ritual specialists about proper procedures
    • Gather appropriate offerings and vessels
    • Select auspicious dates
    • Prepare the ritual sites at Mount Tai

  2. The Feng Sacrifice (封) - At Mount Tai Summit

    • Ascend Mount Tai
    • Create a ritual platform facing east
    • Bury jade tablets with secret prayers
    • Offer sacrifices to Heaven
    • Use yellow offerings and vessels

  3. The Shan Sacrifice (禅) - At Foot of Mount Tai

    • Descend to the northeast foot of Mount Tai
    • Perform sacrifices to Earth at Suran Mountain

    • Proclaim the completion of rituals
