Emergency Field Succession Protocol

A procedure for securing succession when a ruler dies on military campaign far from the capital.

Overview

When a ruler dies in the field, there is danger of chaos, rival claimants, or enemy exploitation. Quick action is essential.

Steps

  1. Secure the ruler's final wishes

    • Obtain clear statement of intended heir before death
    • If ruler offers throne to another, have them decline formally to establish the true heir

  2. Maintain secrecy temporarily

    • Do not announce death immediately
    • Keep the army intact and in position

  3. Conceal and transport

    • Close roads to prevent information leak
    • Move forces to protect the return journey

  4. Retrieve the legitimate heir

    • Send trusted agents to bring the designated heir
    • Use military escort for protection

  5. Install the heir

    • Proclaim the new ruler with proper ceremony
    • Ensure key ministers support the succession

  6. Only then announce the death

    • Return to capital with the new ruler established
    • Conduct proper funeral rites

Historical Example

When King Zhao died on campaign, his ministers had him offer the throne to his brothers multiple times. They declined. The ministers then secretly retrieved his son from Yue, installed him as King Hui, and only then disbanded the army and announced the death.
