Diplomatic Survival at Banquet (鸿门宴脱身)

Overview

A technique for escaping a dangerous diplomatic situation while maintaining appearances and avoiding direct confrontation with a more powerful adversary.

Steps

  1. Build alliances in advance

    • Cultivate relationships with your adversary's advisors and relatives
    • Ensure you have sympathizers who can warn you of danger

  2. Arrive prepared

    • Bring trusted companions who can intervene
    • Have escape routes planned

  3. Show deference and humility

    • Acknowledge your adversary's superior position
    • Explain away any misunderstandings
    • Blame subordinates for any offenses (who can be sacrificed)

  4. Use companions strategically

    • Have loyal followers create diversions if needed
    • Let allies shield you from direct attacks

  5. Create a plausible exit

    • Use a natural pretext (illness, restroom)
    • Do not announce your departure formally

  6. Escape quickly and quietly

    • Leave through a different route than you arrived
    • Travel light with minimal escort
    • Have a trusted deputy remain to make excuses

  7. Maintain the facade

    • Send gifts and apologies through your deputy
    • Do not reveal your true location until safe
