Overview

A persuasion technique for changing a superior's hostile stance by combining emotional appeal with evidence of loyalty and contribution.

Steps

  1. Identify the grievance: Understand exactly why the superior is displeased
  2. Find an intermediary: Approach someone close to the superior (e.g., a trusted relative) rather than directly confronting the superior
  3. Lead with emotion: Begin with tears or visible distress to signal sincerity and gravity
  4. Reframe the narrative: Present the accused party's actions in context:
    • Cite specific past contributions and sacrifices
    • Explain apparent transgressions as misunderstandings or justified actions
    • Highlight the accused's fundamental loyalty and filial piety
  5. Invoke shared bonds: Emphasize family relationships and the superior's own role in the situation
  6. Show vulnerability: Describe the accused's fear, regret, and suffering to evoke sympathy
  7. Request advocacy: Ask the intermediary to speak on behalf of the accused

Decision Points

  • If the grievance involves formal protocol violations, explain them as demonstrations of the superior's favor rather than arrogance
  • If the superior feels disrespected, frame the accused's actions as attempts to honor the superior

Expected Outcomes

  • The superior's anger transforms into understanding
  • Relations are restored and potentially strengthened
  • The advocate gains reputation and rewards

Verification

  • Confirm the intermediary has direct access to the superior and is trusted
  • Validate that cited past contributions are factually accurate and verifiable
  • Check that the superior's response shifted from hostility to understanding before concluding the intervention
