Diplomatic Envoy Conduct

Overview

Classical Chinese diplomatic procedures for envoys representing their state to foreign courts, based on historical accounts of successful missions.

Preparation

  1. Gather intelligence on destination:
    • Political situation
    • Key officials and their interests
    • Cultural customs
  2. Prepare appropriate gifts:
    • Gold, jade, silk, horses
    • Match value to importance of mission
  3. Secure credentials and tokens of authority

Mission Execution

Initial Approach

  1. Announce arrival through proper channels
  2. Present credentials to appropriate officials
  3. Wait for formal reception

Gift Presentation

  • Example: Mission to Zhao for military aid
    • Initial offer: 100 jin gold, 10 chariots (insufficient)
    • Revised offer: 1000 yi gold, 10 white jade discs, 100 chariots (accepted)
  • Scale gifts to the importance of the request

Negotiation Tactics

  1. Use indirect communication:
    • Riddles and metaphors
    • Historical allusions
    • Example: "A bird that doesn't fly for three years..."
  2. Allow counterpart to reach conclusions
  3. Maintain dignity while showing respect

Maintaining Authority

  • Keep tokens of office visible (e.g., imperial tally)
  • Never abandon mission despite obstacles
  • Example: Zhang Qian held captive 10+ years, kept his credentials

Crisis Management

  • If detained: Maintain composure, wait for opportunity
  • If rejected: Assess if offer was insufficient, revise approach
  • If threatened: Appeal to mutual benefit and consequences
