Counter-Intelligence Commander Removal Tactic

A method to eliminate effective enemy commanders by exploiting political vulnerabilities through disinformation.

Prerequisites

  • The enemy commander must have a strained relationship with their sovereign or potential rivals
  • You must have intelligence channels into enemy territory

Steps

  1. Identify the vulnerability - Research the commander's relationship with their leadership (e.g., new king, past conflicts)
  2. Plant the disinformation - Spread rumors that the commander is:
    • Planning to rebel or declare independence
    • Deliberately prolonging the campaign for personal gain
    • Secretly negotiating with you
  3. Make it plausible - Reference real circumstances (e.g., "only two cities remain unconquered, why the delay?")
  4. Exploit the suspicion - The enemy sovereign will likely replace the commander
  5. Capitalize on the change - The replacement is often less competent

Historical Example

Tian Dan spread rumors that Yue Yi wanted to become King of Qi, causing Yan's new king to replace him with the incompetent Qi Jie.

Expected Outcomes

  • Enemy commander removed from command
  • Replacement likely less capable
  • Opportunity to reverse military situation

Verification

  1. Confirm that the target commander's strained relationship with their sovereign has been verified through intelligence before planting disinformation.
  2. Validate that the planted rumors reference real, plausible circumstances (e.g., campaign delays, unconquered cities) to maximize credibility.
  3. Ensure a plan is ready to capitalize militarily on the command change before the replacement can establish effectiveness.
