Ancient Divination Ritual Procedure

Overview

A solemn ritual for seeking guidance from ancestors through divination, as practiced by Zhou Gong to intercede for King Wu's illness.

Steps

  1. Preparation of Sacred Space

    • Set up three altars for the ancestral spirits
    • Position yourself facing north (subordinate position before ancestors)

  2. Ritual Adornment

    • Wear jade disc (bi) on head or chest
    • Hold gui tablet in hands

  3. Proclamation to Ancestors

    • Have the scribe record the prayer on bamboo slips
    • Clearly state:
      • The current situation requiring intervention
      • Your willingness to serve as substitute if needed
      • Your qualifications and capabilities
      • The request for ancestral permission

  4. Divination Process

    • Consult the oracle bones (turtle shells)
    • Interpret the cracks or signs
    • Verify the result by checking written records

  5. Documentation and Secrecy

    • Record the prayer and results on ceremonial documents
    • Store in a sealed golden chest
    • Instruct guardians to maintain strict confidentiality

Validation
