Overview

A method for creating structured chronological tables (世表, 年表) to organize complex historical information across dynasties and rulers.

Steps

  1. Determine reliable starting point - Begin from periods with verifiable records (e.g., 共和 era for reliable dating)
  2. Establish time boundaries - Set clear start and end points for the table
  3. Collect source materials - Read 春秋, 历谱谍, and related historical documents
  4. Extract key events and dates - Note significant occurrences, reign changes, and transitions
  5. Organize by ruler/dynasty - Structure entries around successive rulers or periods
  6. Synchronize multiple polities - Align events across different states/kingdoms in parallel columns
  7. Note gaps explicitly - Mark periods where records are missing or uncertain
  8. Add analytical commentary - Include observations on patterns of rise and fall (兴坏之端)

Decision Points

  • For periods before reliable dating: create 世表 (generation tables) without specific years
  • For periods with reliable dating: create 年表 (year tables) with precise chronology
  • For complex transitional periods: use 月表 (monthly tables) for finer detail

Expected Outcomes

  • Clear visual representation of historical sequences
  • Easy comparison across different states/regions

Validation

  1. Confirm the table type matches the period's source reliability — 世表 for pre-dating periods, 年表 for reliably dated periods, 月表 for transitions

  3. Check that analytical commentary on patterns of rise and fall (兴坏之端) is included alongside the chronological data
