  • Study one specific craft element (dialogue, transitions, openings) and practice it deliberately
  • Read craft books relevant to your writing type

For Range Issues (below 15)

  • Write 2-3 pieces in formats you have not tried before
  • Attempt a piece for a different audience than your default
  • Write one very short piece (300-500 words) and one long piece (2000+ words)
  • Explore a topic outside your comfort zone using your existing writing skills

For Market Readiness Issues (below 15)

  • Research publications, clients, or employers that match your niche
  • Study successful writers in your target market -- what does their work look like?
  • Submit to publications (literary journals, online publications, industry blogs)
  • Pursue guest posts, content platforms, or pro bono work to build clips
  • Get professional editorial feedback on your top 2-3 pieces

Delivery Guidelines

  1. Lead with genuine strengths before addressing weaknesses. Writers invest emotionally in their work.
  2. Be specific in all feedback. "This is good" and "this needs work" are not helpful. Point to exact passages, patterns, or choices.
  3. Distinguish between taste preferences and objective craft issues. Readers may disagree on style but not on clarity.
  4. Frame weaknesses as growth areas with specific exercises or resources to address them.
  5. Respect the writer's genre and audience. Do not apply literary fiction standards to marketing copy or vice versa.
  6. Encourage revision over abandonment. Most weak pieces contain something worth salvaging.
