Short Drama Hook Engineering

Use this skill when the piece must win attention immediately.

Hook Rules

  • The first 1-3 seconds must deliver conflict, danger, accusation, reversal, desire, shock, or unstable emotion.
  • Start as late as possible in the action. Skip warm-up exposition.
  • Open on the strongest playable behavior, not neutral atmosphere.

Editorial Rhythm

  • Every clip needs a clear shape: hook, escalation, exit bridge.
  • If the beat relaxes, add a reaction turn, interruption, reveal, or power shift.
  • Prefer a visible framing or action change roughly every 2 seconds unless a longer take increases pressure.

Writing Heuristics

  • Use verbs that can be performed on camera.
  • Put pressure on the protagonist quickly.
  • Make the last beat pull the viewer into the next clip.

Avoid

  • long setup before conflict
  • generic beauty shots at the opening
  • dialogue that explains instead of colliding
