Loyalty Defense Argument

A rhetorical framework for defending against accusations by establishing historical precedent of wrongful persecution and appealing to universal principles.

Overview

Based on Meng Tian and other historical figures' defenses, this method uses historical examples and principle-based arguments rather than direct denial.

Structure

1. Establish Credibility and Service

  • Detail generations of family service
  • Enumerate specific achievements
  • Quantify contributions (years, battles, territory)
  • Note positions held and trust granted

2. Demonstrate Current Capacity for Betrayal

  • State current power (troops commanded, resources controlled)
  • Acknowledge ability to rebel if that were the intention
  • Explain why rebellion has not occurred despite opportunity

3. Cite Historical Precedents of Wrongful Execution

List examples of loyal ministers wrongly killed:

  • Name the ruler and the minister
  • Note the minister's actual loyalty
  • Show the negative consequences for the ruler/state
  • Draw parallel to current situation

Examples to cite:

  • Guan Longpang executed by Jie
  • Prince Bigan executed by Zhou
  • Wu Zixu executed by King Fuchai of Wu

4. Appeal to Principles

  • "Those who govern by the Way do not kill the innocent"
  • "Punishment should not fall on the blameless"
  • Connect to universal values the accuser claims to uphold

5. Accept Fate While Maintaining Innocence

  • If execution is inevitable, accept with dignity
  • Offer alternative explanation (fate, cosmic forces)
  • Final statement that preserves reputation for posterity

Key Principles

  • Do not beg or show weakness
  • Do not directly accuse the ruler of error
  • Frame as tragedy rather than injustice
  • Preserve honor for historical record

Decision Points

  • If there is genuine chance of acquittal: emphasize service and loyalty
  • If execution is certain: focus on historical precedent and principle
  • If family is threatened: accept fate to protect them

Expected Outcomes

  • Reputation preserved for posterity
  • Historical record reflects injustice
  • Future generations recognize the wrongful execution

Verification

  1. Confirm that the defense establishes credibility through specific, quantifiable service records (years, battles, territory) rather than vague claims.
  2. Validate that historical precedents of wrongful execution are accurately cited and directly parallel to the current accusation.
  3. Ensure the defense frames the situation as tragedy rather than directly accusing the ruler of error, preserving honor for the historical record.
