Brenton, struggling with feelings of inadequacy due to childhood health issues and his appearance, which made him awkward among his peers, was sent by his grandfather to a quiet rural town to recover. During his time there, he formed a deep bond with Sheri, who had grown up in a family steeped in the traditional belief that sons were more valuable than daughters. This upbringing shaped her into a resilient and independent woman. She became a medical doctor but felt immense pressure to marry. In a desperate attempt to appease her family, she hired a boyfriend to accompany her home, mistakenly assuming Brenton was the man she had hired. The two ended up pretending to be a couple, but their ruse was soon exposed, leading to a family crisis.
