Widowed Elise Stanton, the child bride of the Mercer family, survived by selling vegetables. After an accidental night with Prince Owen Pierce, she gave birth to a son. To protect the baby from thugs, she hid him away. Later, desperate to find the baby and earn a living, she became a wet nurse at the Prince estate. Though she and Owen fell for each other, she kept her distance, fearing he was only playing games.
